In today’s era, recent developments in technology have paved the way for monumental changes in the teaching industry. E-learning, which once was seen as impractical to achieve, is now part of the shifting paradigms in the education system. As stated by Heraclitus, a famous Greek philosopher, “change is the only constant thing in life”. The recent pandemic has taught us all too well that embracing the unexpected and learning to see the benefits of new developments, can help one navigate through tough times. Thus, this short article will discuss the benefits of e-learning and how it can positively influence students’ lives.
Firstly, e-learning increases students’ accessibility to a plethora of resources because they can study from anywhere at any time without being limited by learning at school alone. Gone are the days when students had to go to a library to search for journals or books to add to their reports, since they can now access such resources from useful sites like Google Scholar and more, with just a click of a button. According to Yuhanna and Kachik (2020), the easy navigation that the internet provides to exchange information and ideas significantly adds to the benefits of learning online.
Secondly, studying online ensures that students can personalise their study plans to cater to their needs since they can study at their own pace. In group settings or big classrooms, many students have experienced the challenges of feeling left behind or not understanding concepts in the same way as other students in their class. Thus, this helps to increase levels of satisfaction and motivation since students can regulate how they learn according to their capability (Gilbert, 2015). Additionally, children with disabilities who may not be able to be part of physical classrooms can benefit from online learning since they can use study plans that match their abilities to access learning materials (Gilbert, 2015).
Moreover, e-learning offers the advantage of cost-effectiveness since students can study from the comfort of their homes without needing to pay for the costs of commuting to learning centres (Hiranrithikorn, 2019). According to research, there has been a push in the United States for high school students to do more external courses and certifications which can be added to their university credit points to explore different learning opportunities (Gilbert, 2015). Hence, affordable online educational services can help students broaden their learning potential.
Lastly, students can get access to experienced professionals with expert knowledge which can be harder without a virtual platform due to time or physical restrictions. Experienced tutors can offer students the help they require to better understand concepts through a digital platform.
To conclude, there will be continued use and acceptance of e-learning in the near future because of the significant benefits it provides to the industry (Panigrahi, Srivastava and Sharma, 2018). Thus, online learning will play a vital role in enabling students to work flexibly at their own pace within affordable price ranges.
